"For Puja and I, everything is connected,
and we are ever awed by the complexity and beauty of the natural
world. Offering a product which helps people enjoy and support this
beauty and the bountiful ways of nature — while growing an
abundance of food; is very fulfilling for us."
-Udgar Parsons |
“Helping People to Help Themselves”
Our desire, as the founders of Growing Spaces, is to support
others who want to live sustainable, healthy lives. The innovation of
our own company’s product came directly out of our desire to live
in health and balance. These greenhouses demonstrate a solar self-sufficiency
that keeps fresh food on the table, even within the challenge of environmental
and economic changes.
Our Growing Domes handle wind and weather and sustain themselves with
only five hours of sun a day. They hold a carefully crafted eco-system
inside the strongest structure in the world. The synergy of components
in our greenhouse makes it possible to have a year round indoor garden.
One of the best ways we can serve the future is to support
the work and designs of communities intending to “go green”
around the world. Neighborhoods are very important in our era and groups
who band together can often become more self sufficient and safe in their
way of life. Udgar and I spent two careers participating in the growth
and development of several communities whose purpose was to demonstrate
the viability of alternative methods of energy efficiency in organic gardening
and farming and the disciplines that promote holistic health and personal
balance. Each of these proved that the commitment of a group of people
whose values form a common ground could increase their quality of life
incredibly.
It is our privilege as a small company based on this foundational
experience to have provided Growing Domes for schools, intentional communities
and neighborhoods, as well as backyard gardeners. Due to the short growing
season, our domes were designed for the Rocky Mountains. Our hometown
of Pagosa Springs, Colorado has over 80 of them. Typically, when someone
buys a Growing Dome, the neighbors observe its performance over a few
seasons, and then decide to buy one themselves. Therefore, our market
spreads demographically in clusters and mostly by word of mouth.
Now, more than ever we feel a responsibility to show that
our society can thrive beyond the dependence on fossil fuels that is abusing
our natural habitat. According to the latest studies the world may be
out of oil and natural gas by 2032 or sooner. This means that our children
and grand children will be a part of the quest for in alternative energy
resources and development that has been a part of our own lifestyle for
the last thirty years.
To support them we have created a new paradigm in business
that is “part of the solution” of restoring balance for our
natural world. The company vision also grew out of the values we hold
dear. The innovation of our own company’s product came directly
out of our desire to live healthy balanced lives.
Now, people who are committed to living naturally are encouraged
to add the Growing Dome to their lifestyle. They are sold as a kit with
instructions to install or we can provide a installation crew or supervisor
to deliver and help set up the dome.
We know that the beauty and efficiency of growing in our
domes, creates a natural learning opportunity for children of all ages.
There, as our domes become a living laboratory where kids are learning
”where food comes from” and the miracle of life is celebrated
from seed to fruit.
Because our beginning as a company came from making a “choice
for health,” we have decades of experience to share as a family
who know that we can all “help ourselves” to increased self
sufficiency and quality of life.

Our Mission
To make the Growing Dome available to all. The Dome provides
people with an optimum indoor ecosystem for completely natural year-round
gardening and retreat with minimal, if any, reliance on electricity or
fossil fuels.
Our History
In the late 60’s Udgar Parsons, a Dentist and Orthodontist,
made a career change and moved his family to a remote and beautiful
place called Scoraig on the northwest coast of Scotland. There
he pursued farming and practiced the art of self-sufficient living
off the grid. A fascination with alternative life-styles that
"care for the environment and our fellow humans," motivated
Udgar and his family to participate in several alternative community
experiments around the world. The success of turning one overgrazed
sheep ranch into a self-sufficient oasis led to his interest in
cultivating food in challenging situations.
After helping to build a sustainable eco-community in Oregon for
four years, Udgar found himself working with the Biodome at the
Windstar Foundation, in Snowmass, Colorado in 1987. Windstar’s
founders John Denver and Tom Crum were mentored by Buckminster
Fuller who was convinced that if we learned “to do more
with less” we could feed the world and solve our environmental
problems. Eight years of research went into their large Biodome
model, which was to target large Institutions in marketing. In
1989 Udgar founded Growing Spaces. He was inspired to create an
affordable dome greenhouse for backyard gardeners and continued
to enhance the dome’s efficiency by adding several new features.
While pursuing the ideal of sustainability, he noticed that he
was a part of a newly emerging business culture, dedicated to
the entrepreneurship of creating practical solutions to our environmental
challenges.
Our Values
Sustainability: We are committed to modeling a sustainable business
which promotes the use of renewable resources wherever possible
and “Living lightly on the earth”. Using existing
technology in combination with the natural forces of wind, sun,
water and earth, we produce a product that is as efficient as
possible, while remaining affordable.
Health: Conservation and Natural Gardening: In order to conserve
the finite resources of the planet and renew life in ourselves
and in our world, we promote organic gardening without pesticides
and other harmful chemicals. This is the basis of sound health,
healing and a balanced lifestyle.
Sanctuary: Helping our clients to take charge of their diet and
health by growing fresh, safe, organic food in the Growing Dome
environment has the added benefit of creating a peaceful sanctuary
away from the stresses of modern life. The extra space of a beautiful
enclosed garden can be a retreat space that nurtures peace, harmony
and inner balance. Our product increases quality of life and enhances
the life-style of those who value finding a sense of solace through
connection with nature. We are currently developing a Sanctuary
Dome for those who wish to emphasize this focus.
Education: Our background in holistic, sustainable and off-the-grid
living leads to knowledge and wisdom from experience that may
be of service to various clients and schools. We offer a consulting
group to help our clients make the transition to a more natural
way of life and provide support for schools who would like to
use the Growing Dome as a living laboratory for learning about
living in harmony with nature.

What is the Global Significance
of the Growing Dome?
On giving this question a lot of thought I came to the conclusion
that the Growing Dome is a profound demonstration of the direction we
need to move as inhabitants of this planet. Firstly, creative and intelligent
use of resources is a prime value, as we realize that the earth is a finite
system with finite resources. The Growing Dome is a model for this and
also demonstrates energy efficiency; with the looming energy crisis due
to the upcoming or even current Peak Oil situation this efficiency is
more and more needed.
The dome shows the use of naturally occurring energies: the sun, conduction,
convection and radiation as natural methods of heat storage and transfer.
The use of alternative energy sources, eg solar panels to generate power
is also modeled. There is increasing concern about the vast distances
food is being shipped, using large amounts of fossil fuels and creating
increasing amounts of greenhouse gases. Local food production becomes
increasingly more sensible. The Growing Dome enables the individual to
accomplish this even in harsher climates with minimal use of fossil fuel
energy for heating or cooling.
Fresh organic produce is being increasingly seen as a preferred alternative
to food grown using pesticides, insecticides and artificial fertilizers
that continue to pollute our environment, waterways and aquifers. I believe
Buckminster Fuller would have been delighted to see the Growing Dome as
a direct outgrowth of his vision and foresight in caring for "Spaceship
Earth".

What is the Growing Dome and what makes it so Unique?
by Jana Powell, Growing Spaces Sales Associate
People are more concerned than ever about the welfare of themselves and
their families and are rapidly fueling the movement to reclaim the health
and safety of the food on their tables. The numbers of produce-related health
contaminations have increased substantially in the last few years. This
has inspired many to embrace the gardening techniques perfected by our ancestors,
while inventing a few new ideas, to resurrect the backyard edible garden.
Family farms dominated the landscape in the 1930s, when there were over
7 million farms; now there are roughly two million.
Growing your own food is again becoming a popular method that many people
are employing to ensure the safety of their food supply. In the Rocky Mountains
weather can make or break the garden, and gardener. If you want to grow
food in such an unpredictable and extreme climate, you will need to find
a way to extend the growing season. The Growing Dome, a geodesic greenhouse
developed by Udgar Parsons of Growing Spaces, a Colorado-based company,
is the best hobby solar greenhouse kit on the market today, and certainly
for our mountain climate! It is the only greenhouse designed for year-round
energy-efficient growing.
The Growing Dome is a high-tech, solar-powered greenhouse originating
from the genius of Buckminster Fuller, an engineer in the 1950s. He further
enhanced the already superior design of the dome by designing it with triangles--the
most rigid shape known-- instead of the traditional arches. Domes are some
of the strongest and stiffest structures in existence today. The dome structure
is unique because it does not have corners, giving it the ability to enclose
an enormous amount of space without using support columns. This allows for
maximum room for growing plants. Domes have been called “The King
of all Roofs” and cover some of our most important buildings we have,
like state and the national capitals, the Superdome and other sport complexes,
etc.
The Buckminster Fuller geodesic design has inspired many famous dome structures
including Epcot Center in Florida, as well as the Windstar Foundations Bio-dome
in Snowmass, Colorado, founded by John Denver and Thomas Crum, in the 1980’s.
The 50’ diameter – 1/25 acre-Bio- dome grows approximately 4,000
pounds of different fruits and vegetables year-round.
A dentist and orthodontist, Udgar Parsons decided to follow his interest
for sustainable living and caring for fellow humans by changing careers
and farming on the northwest coast of Scotland to learn more about living
off the grid. He participated in many community experiments across the world
before settling in the Aspen/Snowmass area to become the shop manager for
the Bio-dome. “I was totally inspired by the structure,” Parsons
explains, “but unfortunately it cost $80,000 to build and was not
affordable to the average person.” So in 1989, he started Growing
Spaces, LLC to develop a new greenhouse so the average homeowner could take
advantage of this superb technology and grow his/her own food. He developed
the Growing Dome for an amazingly-low cost, while still maintaining all
of the integrity and qualities of the larger Biodome model. Udgar Parsons
had made the dome available and affordable to everyone!
Because the dome is made of triangles, it can withstand heavy snow loads
and winds of up to 130mph! The strong structure also eliminates the need
to pour a concrete foundation, required by so many hobby greenhouse designs
on the market, thus reducing the overall cost and ease of installation.
The dome has been designed to be off-the-grid and independent of fossil
fuels. It is the most energy-efficient structure because it can enclose
the most volume for the minimum surface area. The dome is always facing
the sun giving an even heat input from sun-up to sun-down. A rectangular
greenhouse with a large amount of south facing glazing can experience over-heating
problems during the middle of the day when the sun hits the glazing surface
at 90 degrees. Underground utilities, that can be a hassle to install and
maintain, are not necessary to operate the greenhouse. Eliminating this
dependency reduces costs and headaches!
Udgar explains that so much of our food is full of pesticides and can be
genetically modified without us even knowing, “It seems that more
people are interested in growing their own food for health reasons. People
want organic food, and they have decided that the way to get it is to grow
it themselves.” The research that was done with the Bio-dome found
that they could grow 3 lbs. of food per square foot, per year. A 15’
Growing Dome greenhouse can produce 400-500 lbs. per year. That is enough
food to feed 2-3 adults, if the average adult eats 200 lbs. per year. The
dome has the potential to return your investment--in full--every 4-5 years,
assuming the dome will last 20 years.
In Colorado, it is common for temperatures to fall below freezing. The
Growing Dome can withstand sub-zero temperatures with no supplemental heating.
If the temperature in the dome dips a few degrees below freezing, once the
sun comes out the vegetables and other plants will soon begin growing again.
One of the key features to the dome is the solar-operated subterranean heating
system that works to warm the soil where the plants grow. The warm soil
significantly helps the plants to thrive during the colder months.
The heart and soul of the Growing Dome is a 1200-gallon oval shaped water
tank that supplies the thermal mass (heat) in the greenhouse. Water is the
most effective solar collector because of its ability to keep heat stable.
The water also helps to cool and stabilize the temperatures in the greenhouse
in the summer. The greenhouse stays warmer in the winter months and cooler
in the summer -another feature that sets it apart from any other greenhouse
design.
Other unique features include the tough, long-lived but lightweight polycarbonate
glazing that softly diffuses the light for optimum growing conditions, and
the special reflective double-packed R-10 insulation that covers the northern
2/5 of the dome. Automatic compressed wax activators open and close lower
vents for ventilation, as well as the two windows at the top of the dome.
At the motor manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, Toyota has instituted
a composting program. The organic waste matter produced throughout the plant
is cycled through a highly-efficient composting process. Toyota is using
the compost to grow produce for the cafeteria with the help of a 50-foot
diameter Growing Dome greenhouse from Growing Spaces. After substantial
research, Toyota chose the Growing Dome because of its natural energy-efficient
shape and its demonstration of low-impact technology and passive solar design.
The dome is not just for growing plants. It has been used as the ultimate
indoor eco-system to enclose hot tubs, meditation centers, massage and physical
therapy studios, and as a community greenhouse/center. Schools have implemented
fundraising programs to build a dome to help educate children on the living
earth, nurturing, and science. There are already two schools in the Evergreen/Conifer
area that have built a Growing Dome, to implement this valuable learning
tool. In Pagosa Springs, Colorado, a community that shares the same healthy
living standards adapted by many Evergreen/Conifer residents, there are
already over 60 Growing Domes nestled within the rolling landscape.
Udgar explains “The domes serve backyard gardeners as "ecology
labs," Students harvest herbs, vegetables and medicinal plants in their
specimen gardens, and experiment with solar power, fish reproduction and
plant hybrids in these living classrooms.” The possibilities are unlimited!
The Growing Dome comes as a kit with all of the necessary components pre-cut,
pre-drilled, color coded and ready for assembly. You can tackle the installation
job yourself, or have the knowledgeable and friendly crews at Growing Spaces
help out with the process. Growing Spaces has attempted to reduce the cost
by allowing some of the bulky components that are expensive to ship to be
purchased locally.
“It is really about helping people learn about living and growing
in harmony with the earth and its seasons. Involvement with nature as gardeners
can raise the human spirit through studying the language of life as expressed
in the seasons, and the plants themselves. Increasing the awareness of the
value of organic food for health make this an idea whose time has come”.
